Graduate Research Assistant


General Summary/Overview: Graduate research assistants assist faculty members on research projects and perform research and related duties. This is a temporary laboratory research position for a graduate trainee enrolled in a Graduate PhD program. The Graduate Research Assistant will engage in academic research in a project that diagnoses and treats pneumothorax under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Shuhaiber. The Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital is the world's largest academic research facility dedicated to investigating the effects of light on human biology and to the development of light-mediated, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. A pioneer in light-based biomedical research, the Center has been the source of many of the most successful transfers of this research to clinical applications. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: The Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) will be trained by the PI to perform research in conjunction with his/her academic program for the objective of completing a thesis: Design and set up routine experiments with guidance from PI. Execute protocols of non-routine experiments. Under guidance of the PI, conduct analysis of results and initiate interpretation. Maintain laboratory notebook of procedures learned including experimental results. Perform literature searches under guidance of PI. Assist PI with organizing materials for publication or presentation. Organize and draft material in preparation for miscellaneous reports Present results in the research group and in conference Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required: Excellent communication skills Ability to work independently and as a member of a team Ability to solve technical problems and develop alternative approaches Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Working Conditions: Research laboratory in the Wellman Center. A desk and optics bench will be available as well as access to shared common equipment in the Wellman Center. Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree required and must be enrolled in a graduate program (PhD) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
